Natural experiences on Lolland-Falster
|
|
On Lolland-Falster there are many excellent opportunities for enjoying nature and fresh air in every season. Be inspired by the suggested routes on this page.
Situated in the heart of Lolland, Maribo Lakes form a unique natural area. Nationally speaking, the Maribo Lakes are amongst our most outstanding natural areas and in certain respects also a natural area of international significance. The Maribo Lakes, consisting of lakeside and woodland areas constitute from a biological perspective an area of immense interest because of the unique types of nature and their specialised organisms, including not least the eye-catching plant, bird and animal life. Moreover, the area incorporates numerous culturally historic sites, including amongst others many archaeological monuments. Read more about Maribo Lakes Nature Park
Halskov Vænge on Falster is one of the finest archaeological woodland sites in the country. It was acquired by the state in 1974 to preserve the archaeological monuments and to afford the people an opportunity to experience the historical heritage of the landscape. There are approximately 80 burial mounds and dolmens spread over the 30 hectare woodland site. In the middle of the forest, you will find a small museum that through exhibits and pictures tells the history of the locality. You cannot help but wonder why so many burial mounds were placed in such a small forest. But actually there is nothing to indicate that they have been spaced more densely here than at so many other places. The difference is that they are preserved here in the forest while most of the mounds in the open landscape have been demolished. Read more about Halskov Vænge
Situated on Falster between the two forests of Ovstrup and Hannenov lies Borremosen, a charming meadow and stretch of boggy land with a stream running through it. In the north-easterly part, there is a watery peat bog which constitutes a small bird sanctuary. The area is a part of a state forest district with designated hiking trails in the bog and forest areas. The Danish Forest and Nature Agency has erected information boards, marked out hiking trails and published a leaflet with a map of the area. Read more about Borremosen
On the flat landscape of West Lolland, out towards the west, there is a 12 km long fjord with a group of 10 large and small islands and a 7.5 km long curved peninsula called Albuen. The Fjord is mostly encircled by 4 metre high storm surge dikes and cultivated farm land. Nakskov Fjord has the most islands of any fjord in Denmark and covers an area of 50 km². Out on the fjord there are opportunities for exciting experiences in nature all year round. Tour boats sail often, so there are plenty of possibilities to explore the area from the water.
