The diocese museum is a part of the Museum Lolland-Falster. It is situated in the town of Maribo. The diocese museum is a museum characterized by the history of civilization. It has its roots back to the year of 1890, where the impressive building was consecrated. The old museum has a big unique collection, which contains finds from the earliest times about 14.000 years ago and until today.
Among other things the collection consists of fine finds from the Stone Age, where finds from the dolmen, the passage graves and the settlements of the province have resulted in an impressive collection of worked up flint.
The Bronze Age is mostly represented by many antiquities coming from depot finds and moor finds, whereas the Iron Age mostly is represented by graves and finds coming from settlements.
The finds from the Viking Age and the early middle Ages make an especially interesting part of the archaeological collection. It is a period, where the contact towards the South, i.e. the other side of the Baltic Sea, was very intensive.
The museum also has a big collection of folk art from the province. This collection was made for the rural population in the years from about 1780 until about 1840; the collection contains both embroideries and carved peasant and painted furniture.
Furthermore the museum has a big and unique collection of watches. The watches have been collected during the 100 years of the museum’s existence. The collection consists of about 100 watches. The major part is shown within the exhibition. There is everything from pocket watches to table watches.
Finally the museum has 9 local and unique choir crucifixes from the period 1250 – 1350. The crucifixes were repaired during the year 2008 and during the beginning of 2009, but they are still not public accessible.
Additionally there are several changing exhibitions, viz with different themes.
