Biking Trip: Cozy family route

The route begins in the town square of the picturesque market town of Maribo. Take a picnic basket and enjoy the ride past quaint, half-timbered houses in the village of Maglemer and through a beautiful manorial landscape and lovely deciduous forest to historic Bandholm. The route is suitable for a family outing, and even the youngest cyclists will have a wonderful day.

1. From the main Maribo square, ride north along Jernbanegade towards the station and left into Brovejen. At the end, turn right into Nørrevang and under the viaduct until you go left onto Maglemervej. Soon you are out in the countryside and on the way to a beautiful little village dotted with quaint, half-timbered houses. One of them is a former workhouse from 1876, which today houses a bed & breakfast. Shortly after is a junction at the entrance to Knuthenborg Allé, which provides the perfect place to make a quick stop. Beautiful wooden landscape elements can be used for relaxing, eating your own food, or for running and playing!

2. Afterwards, continue along Knuthenborg Allé, and turn left just before you reach the main entrance of Knuthenborg Safari Park. Follow the gravel road along Knuthenborg's historic walls, which were built in 1867-1871 by stones fished out of Småland’s waters. You will also find Denmark’s largest manor house behind the walls. Just where Hun River crosses under the road and the wall, there is a small bench to take a break and enjoy the lovely view of the open fields.

3. Cross the main road of Skibevej, and the route now continues left into the beautiful Merret Forest. A little further on, you will cross the road with railway tracks, where you can wave to the museum train as it passes by. Check the timetable via the QR code provided for this purpose, and if you would like to get on the train, you need to turn the disc on the footboard signal. However, we recommended that you continue the beautiful route all the way to Bandholm, where you can decide if you want to take the train back to Maribo.

4. Where the route reaches the junction, turn right for the shortest journey to Bandholm, and shortly afterwards you will come across another little bench on the left-hand side where you can take a break, and from here you can visit Nyrods Kilder by foot.

5. Continue cycling through the woods and turn left onto Skibevej. A few hundred metres further on, follow the beautiful avenue on the right all the way down to Bandholm Harbour, where an abundance of experiences and opportunities await you. There are only two places in the whole world where you can find a source of freshwater spring in the middle of a harbour – Bandholm and New York! You can see it from the small pier that goes diagonally into the harbour. Next, we recommend a walk on the “pier promenade”, where you hover over the water for the 400-metre distance to the end of the pier. From here you can take the ferry to Askø, which is certainly worth a visit – perhaps another day? Bandholm’s public outdoor swimming area is also located here. For DKK 10 you can enjoy a fresh dip in what is often Denmark’s warmest bathing water. It is open for swimming from Midsummer Day until the middle of August. You might have a bite to eat or a refreshing drink at Bandholm Hotel before heading back to Maribo – either by bike or on the museum train.

6. Cycle back from Bandholm Harbour onto Strandparken, then turn onto Rolighedsvej.

7. Cross the main road and then continue down Koholtvej to Vårskovvej, where you turn left and continue into the forest.

8. Where the route reaches the junction, we now recommend you turn right and follow the route out onto Skibevej, where there is a small picnic area.

9. Shortly after, turn left onto Skolevej, which you can follow all the way down to Maglemer. Turn right and then take the first right onto Grimstrupvej. Follow this to the north end of Nørresø, where it turns into the “green cycle path” that goes into Maglemervej, which will quickly take you back to the Maribo centre.
