Biking Trip: Marie Grubbe

Few know this corner of Falster by Grønsund, where Marie Grubbe was the ferrywoman back in her day. The trail passes a Klondike-like harbour environment and classic Danish landscape with forests and beaches.

1. From Stubbekøbing Harbour, take bike route 8/9 eastwards along the harbour. The route begins by following a small stretch of the disused railway track between Stubbekøbing and Nykøbing Falster. From there, it passes through the holiday cottage area along Grønsund, over a narrow dyke by Søborg.

2. A rather eerie atmosphere lingers around Næs Harbour. You can just imagine how more than 250 years ago, the ferrywoman Marie Grubbe rowed Ludvig Holberg and other famous people over Grønsund to Hårbølle on Møn. She grew up on the Tjele Gods estate in Himmerland, 14 km north-east of Viborg. But she chose to abandon her life as a noble and follow her desires rather than adhere to the etiquette of the time.

A little further along, you will reach the site where Borrehuset was situated. A stone has been erected in memory of Marie Grubbe, who lived in the house from 1705-1718. The houses at Grønsund are covered with reeds on the roofs and walls, which is typical of houses belonging to Den Classenske Fideicommis.

Before you reach Næsgård, there are some spectacular views of the sea and the land facing the northeastern edge of Falster’s headland at Grønsund.

3. At the end of Gammel Færgevej, you arrive at Næsgaard. Næsgaard was established in 1799, making itDenmark’s oldest agricultural college, but it was closed in 2009. It is marked by a stone engraved with the years 1799 - 1849 - 1949 (marking the establishment of Næsgaard and its anniversaries). The main building dates back to 1906. The courtyard is decorated with a bust of JF Classen. Today, the school is used as a continuation school (a boarding school for 14-17 year olds).

Behind the former agricultural school, you can cycle between the farm buildings and down by the pigsties on the dirt track to Vejringe – where you can judge for yourself whether there is any connection between the state of the road and name of the town (Vejringe means “poor road”).

4. However, the road turns to asphalt and is now called Uglemosevej, so this discomfort is now a thing of the past.

5. In Vejringe, turn left onto Stenlyvej and later right down Rodemarksvej. Now you are on route 45, which can be followed to the Stubbekøbing water tower and along to the town square and harbour.

Did you know, that you can see this route and many other nature experiences in the app “Naturlandet”. The app can be downloaded in App Store or Google Play. All information is accessible in English, Danish and German – the app is FOR FREE.
