Biking Trip: The mountain route

There aren’t actually any mountains in the Nysted region, but there are smaller hills where cyclists can work up quite a sweat if they so choose. By Lolland’s standards, the area northwest of Nysted is quite hilly, as it is part of a glacial formation that stretches diagonally across the island from Nysted via the Maribo lakes to Ravnsby Bakker on Northwest Lolland.

1. From Nysted, go down the path by the Ålholm castle at the corner of Strandgade and Slotsgade. The castle was built in 1250 on an island in Nysted Nor. Since then, an embankment has been made, which provides access to the castle.

2. Follow the path going towards Ålhom Parkvej and out to the small village of Stubberup. The village has a small beach and a cosy harbour, making it a nice little detour.

3. In Stubberup, follow Stubberupvej right up to Sakskøbingvej, where you will turn left.

4. From here, turn right down Mallehavevej, which after a few sharp turns meanders through scenic countryside with wide-open fields. The road crosses Fuglsangvej and turns into Torupvej, which you follow until it joins Grønnegadevej, adjacent to Bregninge Church.

5. Here, turn right. Follow Grønnegadevej all the way back to Kettinge, which lies just on the other side of Fuglsangvej.

Kettinge is home to an old gravel pit that has been restored as a beautiful area with lakes, bridges and a large network of paths. You will also find the artificial mountain of Troelshøj, which is Lolland’s highest point.

6. In Kettinge, turn right down Kettingevej, which you follow through to Søby, where Kettingevej becomes a closed road. This is the old country road between Kettinge and Nysted, which in 1968 was replaced by a new route heading more towards the east. Enjoy the peaceful journey along the old road, which has several small hills to get your heart beating faster.

7. The country road ends just north of Nysted.

Different variations of this route are available, with the option of taking small detours along smaller roads.
