The cathedral, which has three aisles, was built in the centre of Maribo by Denmark`s first female head of state, Queen Margrethe, who lived from 1353 until 1412. She founded Brigittine Abbey Church, which admitte for both nuns and monks.
Brigittine Church was a double abbey church. It was estimated to accommodate 60 nons and 25 monks (including 12 priests) under the general confessor.
